Nævertinden and Kopparfjellet
The Harstad-Narvik area hasn’t seen fresh snow since last November, which sucks if you want to do any kiting or skiing around here. Unless you enjoy hard packed snow that’s basically ice at this point. Today we extended the search for skiable snow towards the Swedish border and Riksgränsen area. The area around Nævertinden (1419m) and Kopparfjellet (911m) were an improvement; not exactly perfect snow, but better than nothing!
Luosto and Pyhä
Went skiing with Maija for a couple of days:
These are shot with the Fuji X-E2, which I’m trying out to see if it has what it takes to be a lighter, space saving camera system for ski and kite tours instead of the insufferably bulky 5D mkIII. It needs getting used to, and there are a few annoying kinks here and there, but there’s definitely potential in this snazzy little camera. In the spirit of more mobile gear, the photos were edited with an iPad (Photoshop Touch) whilst sitting in the train heading back south.

Season openers
A couple of shots from the Harstad area from the first ski and snowkiting trips of the season. Snow came in early to the Harstad area this year and at the moment the mountains are covered with about 1m of snow. The wind has blown the snow around, so there are places with soft powder, and areas (especially peaks) with hard, crusty snow. Still have to wait until January 10th to see the sun rise above the horizon though.
Snowkiting season started at our home spot at Sollifjellet. Tons of snow and optimal wind. The only thing that’s missing is the sun.
Ski season opener at spanstinden after the first snowfall of the year.
